Programme summary

Being a teacher has never been only about lecturing facts to a group of students. By spending time with your students you have an unique position to have a direct impact on their life. This is especially relevant in cases where students don’t have good role models in their lives. It is important, they have someone who connects with them. To do this, we provide you with tools to work with the students’ psychological needs. With this course on Developing Emotional Intelligence we are developing the competencies of teachers for building emotional capacity of their students. We do this through activities that are ready to use in the classroom. Because the program of the course is a mix of theoretical knowledge supported by practical activities it enables the participants to deepen their understanding through their own experience.

Main objective of this program is to equip participants with knowledge and skills to enhance their own emotional intelligence. And to provide them with tools to enhance emotional intelligence of their students. During the course the participants will get acquainted with five pillars of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-management, motivation, empathy and social skills. Through various interactive activities they will raise awareness of the importance of emotions. Also the importance of emotional intelligence for private and professional life. During the course, they will learn various techniques and exercises for the development of empathy, the development of resilience, and the management of conflicts that are ready for use in the classroom.


The program of the course is designed interactively, along with discussions, individual and team exercises. It is important that all participants have the opportunity to share their experience, so we conduct the course in small groups (up to 20 people). Participants will also receive material with practical exercises and worksheets, which will help them to use the acquired knowledge in their classes and strengthen the skills of emotional intelligence in their students. At the end, each participant will prepare his own action plan, which methods he will use in his classes.

Target groups

The course is aimed for teachers (primary, secondary, vocational, adult), class teachers, teacher trainers, educational counsellors, school psychologists, headteachers / principals and also for other individuals who are interested in deepening their understanding of their emotional world.

Programme day-by-day


– Introductory meeting, explanation of practical arrangements, presentation of timetable, information about course venue

– Creating a secure space for quality group work.


– Icebreakers and morning breathing exercise.
– Introduction to the subject of emotional intelligence as a personality trait. Presentation of the five pillars of EQ by Goleman: self-awareness, self-management, motivation, empathy and social skills.
– What are the emotions, what function they have and how they can benefit us.


– Self-awareness. Check-in with your own emotional world exercise.
– Group role-playing activity with which we recognise the connection between thoughts, behaviours and emotions.
– Preparing your own activity for classroom.


– Morning breathing exercise.
– Managing your own emotions. How can we influence emotions trough thoughts and behaviour. Techniques of relaxation, mindfulness meditation.
– Afternoon excursion.


– Techniques and activities that promote empathy.
– How to test your own EQ.
– Recognising facial signs of emotions by Paul Ekman.


– Social skills. Role playing different techniques of effective communication.
– Giving feedback with I messages.
– Self-assessment conflict management questionnaire – the typology of Thomas Kilman.


– Review of the techniques and methods that participants learned during the program.
– Preparation of their own action plan, where, how and when they will use them.
– Final evaluation of the process.

Which competencies will you acquire in the “Developing Emotional Intelligence” course?

By the end of the course you will:

  • know how to build on emotional capacity of their students,
  • have the theoretical knowledge about emotional intelligence, as personality trait and its five pillars,
  • be able to present the evolutionary function of basic emotions (shame, anger, sadness, disgust and joy) and their characteristic facial expressions to their students,
  • be equipped with the skills of perceiving, recognising and distinguishing one’s own feelings and feelings of others,
  • know how to use concrete activities in the classroom with students to present the connection between thoughts, emotions and behaviour,
  • be able present and guide shorter and longer relaxation activities in their classrooms,
  • know the characteristics that make it easier / more difficult for the emphatic experience of others,
  • be able to perform activities with their students that increase empathy capacities,
  • know five conflict styles by Kilman, and will know how to present them to students.

In what ways can you integrate competencies into work?

Participants will receive booklets with practical exercises and worksheets, which will help them to use the acquired knowledge in their classes and strengthen the skills of emotional intelligence of their students. At the end, each participant will prepare his own action plan, which methods he will use in his classes.

Meet the trainers

Jerneja Šibilja


Jerneja Šibilja earned her bachelor degree in European studies and she is finishing the study of psychology. She works as an event organizer in Primera and trainer in STEP Institute. She has carried out several workshops in the field of personal growth and strengthening of soft skills. She was active as volunteer and trainer in different prevention and educational programs and projects for children, youth and adults. She also organized and coordinated several international seminars, workshops and conferences. In the last year she works in the field of administrative-coordinative work and project management. She also constantly participates in different seminars, workshops and other professional courses to gain new knowledge and experience and upgrade her skills.

Brina Menart


Brina Menart is a psychologist and in education of integrative transactional analysis psychotherapy. She is also an idealist with a deep conviction that the world is beautiful and a realist who is ready to work to become so. Her main professional interests are grit, emotional intelligence, art of hosting and everything else that relates to well being.

She dedicates a lot of her spare time working with and for young people. That is why she co-funded educational institute Pogovorjevalnice. There she runs psychoeducational workshops relating to subjects of stress management, time management, emotional awareness and relaxation techniques.

Always looking ways to improve, she likes to update her skills on regular basis. So far she is a qualified SDI (Strength Deployment Inventory) facilitator, has completed a course of medical hypnosis and hypnotherapy for medical professionals and an introductory course in sport psychology. She enjoys the most when she succeeds to establish a safe place for participants of her workshops, so they can spend the most time in the learning zone, reaching their potential.
